Pharmaceutical Technology Department

Department of pharmaceutical technology is divided, on functional basis, into three laboratories. Each year, those three laboratories manufacture more than 500 000 doses of various sterile and non-sterile preparations.

The First Laboratory: It manufactures sterile preparations (infusions, injections, ophthalmological products). They include specific products used for performing specific operative procedures such as cardiosurgical procedures on the open heart and/or kidney and liver transplantations, all of which are successfully performed at the Military Medical Academy. Many of those products cannot be purchased at the domestic market. This laboratory is recognizable for manufacturing parenteral fluids for total parenteral nutrition (TPN). It includes AIO solutions (All in One) providing all nutritients balanced in relation to individual metabolic needs of patients who are unable to feed themselves normally and take in those nutritional substances intravenously.

The Second Laboratory: It deals with manufacturing galenic series  and unit dose drugs, which do not require sterilization and specific manufacturing conditions. The laboratory product directory includes more than 150 modular fluid, semisolid and solid pharmaceutical forms (solutions, ointments, creams, gels, tablets, powders ....). It is also focused on improvement of manufacture, introduction of new peparations and investigation in the field of local dermatologic, dental, gynecologic and ophthalmological preparations.

The Third Laboratory: In the past, it dealt with modular manufacture of reagents based on procedures of Pharmacopeias and other pharmacological textbooks for the needs of clinical and institute laboratories. It is now, as already mentioned, the responsibility of the Second Laboratory. The 3rd laboratory is currently undergoing the phase of technical-technological changes to grow into the organizational unit dealing with modular preparation of cytotoxic drugs for the needs of all MMA clinics and institutes.

In addition to the main activity – drug manufacture, all three laboratories serve as a teaching base which  training programs in the field of pharmaceutical technology offers residencies, internships to graduates from the School of Pharmacy and pharmaceutical technicians, practical training to students of the Schools of Pharmacy
