HISTORY

March 2, 1844. – by the Decree of the Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic,  the first Central Military Hospital was established on the foundations of the military hospital in Belgrade That date is celebrated as the Day of the MMA  today.
 

1909.   – Construction of a new building of the General Military Hospital on Vracar marked the beginning of  operation of the most advanced  400-bed healthcare facility in the Balkans.

1912. – 1918  – Through the Balkan wars and the First World War as well, the Serbian War Surgery  ranked on the very top in the field of  World War Medicine.
 
1920  – Six physicians from the military hospital were involved  in the establishment of the School of Medicine in Belgrade.
 
1930   – The hospital,  once again, changed its name into the  General Military Hospital  opeating under the Health Department  of the Defence Ministry of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
 
1941. – 1945 – Through the Second World War, the  General Military Hospital of the Supreme Headquarters  of the National Liberation Army  contributed a great deal to the defence of the country by treating the wounded and sick.
 
1949 – The military hospital was finally renamed the Military Medical Academy.

1960  – The Act on the Military Medical Academy as the top military medical, educational and medical research institution was passed.
 
1981 – New building on the Banjica hill where the Military Medical Academy is still situated was constructed. The construction itself is the pride of the Yugoslav architecture and one of the symbols of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.

2007  – By the Agreement of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, the Military Medical Academy was functionally integrated into the National Public Health System.
