Center for Clinical Pharmacology
Center for Clinical Pharmacology is a highly specialized professional and scientific-research organizational unit operating within the framework of the MMA’s Treatment Sector. It deals with clinical investigation of drugs and medical devices used at the Academy for improving the efficacy and safety of the treatment. It implies its involvement in coordination and direct engagement in the execution of all the phases of clinical trials including bioavailability/bioequivalence studies of drugs in accordance with the Good Clinical Practice guidelines and valid national legal regulations; review of claims for investigation of drugs and medical devices at the Academy; review of the investigation plan and test list; control of examinees during therapeutic trials; processing of the obtained results, and review of reports on clinical trials. All those activities are carried out through the work of:
- Clinical Trial Team;
- Drug Commission, and
- MMA’s Ethic Committee;
The Center for Clinical Pharmacology conducts more than 30 clinical trials each year.
Clinical drug investigations have been conducted at the Military Medical Academy since 1982.
The provision of effective services is ensured by
- The support of clinical and functional diagnostic units and Outpatient Diagnostic Center’s wards and the use of equipment for clinical drug investigations conducted in ill patients and healthy volunteers;
- Possibility to quickly recruit patients-examinees from the MMA Distinct Specialty Clinics;
- Continuous work of the Services of the Institutes of Pharmacy, Medical Biochemistry, Microbiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Blood Transfusion, Pathology and Toxicology and pharmacology operating within the framework of the Poison Control Center as well as the other organizational units depending on the kind of investigation;
- Processing and storing of biological samples according to the good clinical practice guidelines at the temperature from -200C to -700C;
- Storing and handling of testing components by a professional pharmacist from the Pharmacy Institute according to the good clinical practice guidelines, and
- Good possibilities for the visits and work of monitors and auditor of clinical studies.
Personnel of the Clinical Pharmacology Center are currently involved in or plan to undertake the following activities:
- Identification, monitoring evaluation and reporting of unwanted adverse drug reactions to the National Pharmacovigilance (Drug Safety Monitoring) Center of the Drugs and Medical Material Agency. Clinical pharmacologists of the Clinical Pharmacology Center as members of the Agency are responsible for the safe use of drugs throughout the military health system including all primary to the tertiary care institutions such as the Military Medical Academy;
- Establishment and operation of the Drug Information Service;
- Practical application of pharmacotherapeutic knowledge in treating concrete clinical-therapeutic problems with specialists from other areas through team work in clinical and ambulatory care settings;
- Introduction of methods of pharmacoeconomic evaluation and correlation of the use of certain groups of drugs for the treatment of patients with specific diagnosis and the guidelines for the appropriate therapy;
- Introduction of methods for therapeutic drug concentrations monitoring and interpretation of findings obtained by measuring drug concentrations in blood and other body fluids;
- Coordination and provision of teaching activities in clinical pharmacology at the Military Medical Academy;
- Rational pharmacotherapy education for physicians, pharmacists and other medical personnel through courses within continuous medical education framework, seminars, lectures, etc. at the Military Medical Academy;
- Research projects funded by the Armed Forces of Serbia as well as those financed by institutions other than military such as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Development of the Republic of Serbia
For clinical investigations to be conducted at the Military Medical Academy, Investigational New Drug Application (IND) Form, which is available at our website should be completed and printed out, and along with supporting documents, sent to the following address:
