The Same Day Surgery Center of the Military Medical Academy is a part of the Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic. It opened its door on May 20, 2005. It is the only institution of that kind in our country.
It has been founded on the model of existing world medical centers and designed for surgeries, which could be performed in one to two hours, which do not require postoperative care longer than 24 hour and, thus allow a patient to leave the hospital on the same day.
It was the way to rationalize the bad capacity of the Military Medical Academy, reduce the time on the waiting list for an operation and prevent the possibility of spreading nosocomial infections. On the other hand, it offers every patient the most advanced surgical and anesthesiologic treatment and care.
Center for the Same Day Surgery has two operating rooms, a 5-bed recovery room and an anesthesiology ward. It performs around 5000 surgeries under various kinds of anesthesia (local, regional and general anesthesia) each year.
It is operated by the most skilled and experienced surgeons from all the MMA’s surgical clinics and anesthesiologists from the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Clinic.
Prior to any elective surgery, every patient indicated for an operation by a selected surgeon undergoes anesthesiologic exams. A patient having undergone the surgery under general anesthesia is transfered to the recovery room and closely observed by an anestesiologist and a surgeon till she/he is released and sent home for further home care.
Since the Military Medical Academy is strongly determined to keep itself abreast of any achievements in the field of medicine in both the country and world and secure its place on the top of it, it is putting maximum efforts to see endoscopy entering the fields of abdominal, vascular, orthopedic surgery and other branches of surgery as well.
Services
The Center for the Same Day Surgery is active in the fields of all surgical branches. Its offers a variety of surgery procedures performed under local, regional and general anesthesia such as: surgery of groin hernia, biopsy and extirpation of a fibroadenoma of the breast, surgeries in the perianal area, surgeries of the arteriovenous fistula and veins, eyelids and ear corrections, surgical excision of scarves and benign lesions of cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue, biopsy of the lymph nodes, removal of osteofixation deposits from the bones, surgery of the third tonsil, varicocele, circumcision and surgical correction of the frenulum of the tongue, specific surgeries in peripheral nerves, implantation and revision of endosealed implants in endetulous cases and many others.
The Center also expects to see endoscopy (laparoscopic surgery of the gallbladder and groin hernia, arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder and ankle) entering into its routine practice in the near future.
