History
The history of Medical Biochemistry begins with 1880, when the Chemical Department for biochemical analyses was established in Belgrade. In 1930, Biochemical Laboratory started operating as a part of Military Hygienic Institution within the framework of the then Central Military Hospital. It played a crucial role in the development of Medical Biochemistry in Serbia. This laboratory was run by a pharmacist Miloš Jančić, Phar. M. After the World War 2, in April 1946, the Central Clinical-Chemical Laboratory was set up within the Central Hospital of the Yugoslav Army. Over the period from 1953 to 1981, it shared the building of the MMA’s Internal Clinic, in Paster St. in Belgrade. Its first head was Capt.I Cl. Ljubomir Purać, Phar. M, who was promoted into the rank of Colonel in the early 70s and awarded the title of professor of Medical Biochemistry. During his tour of duty, as of 1955, he started offering fellowships to the first specialists in Medical Biochemistry for education and training purposes..
Until 1998, the position of the head of the Central Clinical-Chemical Laboratory was served by medical biochemistry specialists Col. Božidar Savić, Phar.M, Col. Vera Mešterović, Phar.M, Col. Grujo Grujevski, Phar.M and Col. Petar Todorović, Phar.M
Due to its hard work, investments into the biochemical profession and science, good selection and training of its personnel, the Central Clinical-Chemical Laboratory reached a high level of professional work and became a professional and teaching site for medical biochemistry residents Having further extended its scope of work to include scientific-research and teaching activities, the laboratory grew into the Institute of Medical Biochemistry in 1999. It was first headed by Col. Radmila Nikolajević, Phar.M. a specialist in Medical Biochemistry, and since 2003, that position has been assumed by LtCol. Janko Pejović, MS, a specialist in Medical Biochemistry.
Services
The Institute continuously follows all the novelties in the field of Medical Biochemistry and introduces determinations of new biochemical constituents in biological fluids, which are necessary for further development of diagnostic assessment and prediction of progression of the disease as well as monitoring the clinical course of the disease. Along with that, it advances its existing methodology to improve the precision and accuracy of analyses and the speed of their determination. The Institute boasts the state-of-the-art equipment and apparatuses for conducting complex analytical procedures such as determination of hormones in the blood using chemilluminescent technique, tumor markers and rheumatoid factors by immunoenzymatic procedures, apolipoproteins (A, B, E), and other numerous specific proteins and the acute phase reactants with immunoephelometric method. The Immunochemical Laboratory determines parameters for humeral immunity (proenzymes of the complement system, immunoglobulin isotypes, immune complexes, Cistatin C), what has largely contributed to adequate diagnosing of various pathological conditions within the framework of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. It still applies gel techniques such as RID, immunolectrophoresis, immunofixation and isoelectrofocusing as well as ionoexchange, affine chromatography and gel-filtration within the investigation processes.
In addition to determination of known coagulation factors, the Laboratory for Hemostasis conducts analyses of natural anticoagulants (proteins C and S, antithrombin III, activated protein C (APC) resistance, lupus anticoagulants), and factors of fibrinolysis (PAI-1, plasminogen, alpha 2-antiplasmin, D-dimer) using sophisticated equipment of the latest generation ...
Scientific and research work of the Institute
The Institute puts a significant emphasis on the scientific and research work. It has an excellent cooperation with the Institute of Medical Biochemistry of the Pharmacy School in Belgrade, and serves as one of teaching sites of the University of Belgrade for specialization and sub specialization of graduated pharmacists in the field of Medical Biochemistry and for preparing Master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations as well.
Within the framework of the scientific-teaching activities, biochemists from this Institute are involved in the scientific research and education programs run at the Military Medical Academy and in the other healthcare-medical institutions in Belgrade and Serbia as well.
The publishing activity of the Institute is reflected in a large number of papers published in national and international professional and scientific journals. Its members are coauthors of 4 books by the group of eminent MMA’s experts dealing with rheumatological, dermatovenerological and nephrological topics: (M. Popović: Therapy of rheumatoid diseases; M. Popović: Guidance in Rheumatology, Đ. Karadaglić: Dermatology; Đ Maksić: Peritoneal Dialysis).
Professional and scientific activities the Institute’s biochemists are involved in are carried out through regular meetings of the Medical Biochemists Association of Serbia, Immunology Association of Serbia and Serbian Medical Society (Its Transplantation Section) as well as oral presentations at national and international congresses and symposiums.
Our determined to apply advanced trends of the laboratory diagnostics bounds us not only to introduce sensitive and specific diagnostic and prognostic indicators of clinical-pathological conditions, but directs us towards some fundamental investigations in the field of biochemistry at sub cellular level, which requires greater utilization of molecular biological, immunohematological, immunogenetic and other procedures. In that context, we have already been prepared for teamwork in 24-hour monitoring of the effects of the therapy for transplanted organs (the kidney, bone marrow, liver, etc.)
Medical team
This responsible and multidisciplinary work is carried out by highly professional, widely profiled team of specilists and subspecialists supported with qualified and skilled senior and junior laboratory staff, who in addition to their regular daily duties, actively participate in medical events of their respective associations.
The institute has 53 employees, of which 11 are highly qualified professionals, PhD and Master’s degree holders, specialists in Medical Biochemistry, pharmacists, biologists and physic-chemists.
The level of expertise and quality of work are confirmed by the Decision of the Ministry of Work and Social Policy published in the FRY Official Gazette No 35 as of 02.08.1996, which says that MMA is a referral institution.
