The Center for Pathology and Forensic Medicine is an organizational unit of the Military Medical Academy operating within the framework of the Group of Diagnostic Institutes. It has 50 employees, of which 18 with academic degrees, 5 with high nursing degrees and 27 with nursing school diploma. There are 4 doctors with PhD and 3 with Master’s degree, 7 pathologists, 4 specialists in Forensic Medicine, 3 cytologists, 2 molecular biologists, 1 biologist, 1 biochemist as well as laboratory and medical technicians.

The Center comprises two separate organizational units: the Institute of Pathology and Forensic Medicine Institute. Even though those two units defer in areas of their expertise, they are functionally integrated in terms of sharing the same space, personnel and equipment.
Institute of Pathology
The Institute of Pathology performs complete morphological diagnostic procedures, i.e. biopsy, cytological, cytogenetic and electro-microscopic analyses of the tissue and tissue fluid samples taken from the patient.
It performs autopsies and laboratory expertise on the dead as well. It is also involved in consiliar and scientific-research work.
On average, the Institute diagnostically analyzes about 12 000 samples taken from the patients, conducts over 2000 ex tempore analyses, 114 000 cytological and cytogenetic examinations and around 100 electro-microscopic analyses each year.
Forensic Medicine Institute
The doctors from this Institute have been largely involved in forensic medicine expertise of various types. In addition to post-mortem examinations performed in cases of unclear or forceful death, they are engaged in providing forensic expert testimony at the court request, conducting forensic investigation and appear at hearings and court proceedings as forensic experts.
The Institute conducts each year about 300 forensic-medical port mortem examinations, provides forensic expert testimonies at the court request and around 150 at court proceedings.
