Clinic for Vascular Surgery
The Clinic for Vascular Surgery was established by the Decree of the Minister of Defence dated November 11, 2005.
The Clinic deals with diagnosis, surgical and conservative treatment. It treats all kinds of vascular diseases and injuries.
The Clinic serves active-duty service members, military retirees and their family members as well as civilians on the basis of a referral or their request.
Staff members of the Clinic are qualified and trained for treatmetnt of acute and chronic conditions and injuries involving arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.
All the physicians of this Clinic are active-duty service members (3 colonels and 4 majors). Three of them are involved in teaching, one as a professor and the other two as asistants.
Activities
The Clinic deals with preoperative diagnosis, surgical procedures in the fields of vascular surgery, kidney and liver transplantation and postoperative treatmetnt and care.
They include:
- bypass surgery for bypassing occluded arteries;
- aneurysm resection (aortic aneurysm) in various regions;
- creation of an access to the patient’s bloodstream via arteriovenous fistula;
- thrombectomy;
- surgeries of varicose veins;
- surgery of venous ulcer by the most advanced endoscopic methods and,
- placement of stents in occluded arteries
Deep vein thrombosis in the extremities is also treated
It treats about 1000 patients a year, mostly those suffureng from arterosclerosis, occlusions or narrowing of the principal blood vessels and occlusions in peripheral blood vessels in diabetic patients.
In treatment of inoperable patients, the Clinic applies a conservative type of therapy. It implies administration of drugs for widening blood vessels and the use of hyperbaric chambers.
In addition to medical-surgical treatment it provides, the Clinic is active in the field of education and training. It offers medical education and training programs for physicians in those specialties and subspecialties this and others clinics of the Military Medical Academy requires the most. It also provides postgraduate medical training for all the residents and students of the Reserve Officers School.
In close partnership with the MMA’s Medical Research Institute, the Clinic conducts medical research projects.
Organization of and participation in medical seminars, symposiums and congresses are the activities the Clinic also arries out.
Organizational structure
The Clinic has three Departments and 33 inpatient beds in operation.
- Department of Vascular Surgery (XI floor of the hospital)
- Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Treatment of Vascular Patients (XI floor of the hospital)
- Department of Transplantation Surgery (IV floor of the hospital)
The Clinic has one operating room wthin the Operating Block and may also activate additional operating rooms if required.
The Clinic has its Ward for Vascular Surgery and Functional Diagnosis unit(III floor of the policlinic’s building) acting within the framework of the Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic. It provides medical examinations and health check-ups of patients and preoperative diagnosis as well.
It operates every day (Monday through Friday) from 07.30 a.m. to 03.30 p.m receiving military insured patients and civilian referrals. Patients seeking treatment with this Clinic at their own charge are received withing its afternoon hours of operation from 03,30 p.m. to 07.30 p.m. But they have to call the Clinic's Ward first to timely schedule their examination, follow-up treatment or elective surgery at the Clinic.
The admission to the Clinic is obtained through:
- referral of the relevant Fund and,
- at the request of a self-pay patient
Emergencies are admitted through the Emergency Center.
As a part of the surgical team, surgeons from this Clinic operate the Same Day Surgery Center where they carry out smaller surgical procedures and vasodilation therapies.
