Operating Block with Centralized Sterilization
The Operating Block includes 20 operating rooms out of which 16 are located in the central Operating Block. The other 4 rooms are in the Emergency Center (two) and at the Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns (two). All the operating rooms boast the state-of-the-art equipment including sterilization and anesthesiology apparatus. Central distribution of gases enables the most complicated surgical procedures to be performed.
About 13000 surgeries from most simple to most complex such as tissue and organ transplantation are performed in this Operating Block each year.
Centralized sterilization unit is intended for sterilizing medical disposables and instruments required for operation of all the organizational units of the Military Medical Academy. It also serves other clients outside this institution on the basis of signed contracts on material sterilization.
It is equipped with steam and formaldehyde sterilizations for sterilization of thermolabile material.
Personnel
The Operating block with centralized sterilization unit is operated by a general surgeon LtCol. Dragan Grbović, M.D.
The Block is staffed by highly qualified medical technicians - operating instrument nurses, paramedics, medical technicians and staff members trained in all sterilization related activities.
Its nursing staff continues the long tradition of nursing practice in this specialized area within the Military Medical Academy.
The Operating block provides education and training as well. It offers medical education programs for junior instrument nurses and continuous on-the job-training (OJT). It also trains students of the Medical Technician School in Ćuprija and all the others interested in this field of surgery.
Close partnership with surgeons from other surgical clinics of the Military Medical Academy ensures introduction of new surgical procedures into their clinical practice.
Equipment
Proceeding from the fact that there is no modern surgery without advanced technology, the Operating Block is equipped with a large number of modern apparatus and devices (6 endoscopes, 2 x-ray apparatus, surgical knives, argon plasma, generators, harmonious scalpel, microscopes, neurosurgical electrical aspirator, ultrasound apparatus for lens emulsification, etc.). That equipment enables surgeons to perform the most advanced surgical procedures what, according not only to Serbian but European standards either, places this institution among those boasting the state-of-the-art equipment.
