Clinic for Neurosurgery  is a modern neurosurgery facility  treating neurosurgical diseases and injuries in the intracranial section, spinal coloumn and peripheral nerves. It also deals with medical research in the field of neurosurgery and provides education and training for younger medical personnel.

It has two Departments and operates 36 inpatient beds along with  a variable number of beds in the Surgical ICU. Within the Operating Block, it has one operating room equipped with the state-of'-the-art instruments, operating microscope, ultrasound aspirators, neuroendoscopy system  and intraoperative  radioscopy system. If required, the Clinic can use other operating rooms.   

The Clinic  is housed on  the  12th floor of the MMA's building.

It performs around 600 operations. The most common include surgeries of  loin and neck discus hernia, all  kinds of intracranial and spinal tumors, all kinds of instrumental stabilization of the vertebral column, endovascular surgeries of vascular brain and spinal malformations as well as surgeries of various  spontaneous and traumatic intracranial hemorrhage.

The Clinic's physicians are the authors of a large number of books and monographies and more than 200 papers in the field of neurosurgery.  Twenty papers have been published in  top international neurosurgical journals.

Neurosurgery Department of the MMA's Surgical Clinic was established in1956 and through the time it has grown into the Clinic for Neurosurgery (1982). Pioneers of the military neurosurgery were professors Dragojević, Štajnfl and Ercegovac whose work was deeply weaved into the roots of the Clinic.                   

Services

The most importatnt neurosurgical services this Clinic provides  include:
-    Decompressive spinal surgeries (discus hernia and spinal stenosis);
-    Spinal stabilization procedures (frontal and dorsal stabilization, corporectomy, artiphicial discus, etc.);
-    Extirpation of all kinds of spinal and cranial tumors;
-    Surgical treatment of chronic painful conditions including implantation of spinal stimulators, microvascular decompression in trigeminal neuralgia and similar conditions, DREZ surgery relating to chronic neuropathic pain etc.;
-    All kinds of surgeries of peripheral nerves and  branchial plexus;
-    Endovascular  treatment of vascular brain malformations (aneurysm and AVM);
-    Drainage and similar procedures in hydrocephalys and arachnoid cysts and,
-    Surgical and nonsurgical treatment of all kinds of cranial and spinal trauma by monitoring intracranial pressure.

Admission procedure

Admission to the Clinic is obtained trough a referral pre-certified by a relevant Health Fund or by making a deposit for 90% of expected costs of treatment. Patient's admission should be indicated by a neurosurgeon in the Neurosurgery Ward and surgery is scheduled based on the patients' waiting list. Waiting time for a surgery  considered not urgent is one month. Emergencies do not require a referral prior to admission.

Neurosurgery Ward

It is housed on the third floor of the Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic. It receives military and civilian insured  within its  hours of operation from 07,30 a.m. to  03,30 p.m and self-pay patients between 15,30 a.m. and 19,30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
