About the Clinic
The first ophtalmological ward both in Belgrade and the Kingdom of Serbia was founded in the late 1899 by Lt. Djordje Nešić.
Several years later, more precisely in 1903, medical Lieutenant of that time, Žarko Trpković established the first Eye Department of the Military Hospital in Belgrade. By the decree of the then Secretary of Defence, it grew into the Eye Clinic.
Since its establishment up to date, the Eye Clinic was and has remaind a leader in the field of ophtalmology on our territory in terms of medical staff’s expertise, organization of work, treatment of patients, surgery, equipment, introduction of new treatment methods.
In the former FRY, in 1975, Col. Prof. Miodrag Savičević, M.D., was the first to perform the intraocular lens implantation and the Eye Clinic of the Military Medical Academy was the place where, in 1979, the first posterior vitrectomy was performed. The Military Medical Academy was also the institution where, in 1991, the first surgery of cataracts applying ultrasound method was done .
In 2005, the position of the head of the Clinic was assumed by Col. Prof. Miroslav Vukosavljević, who immediately upon his appointment started with reconstructuring the Clinic according to European and world standards along with introduction of new, mainly, surgical methods of treatment.
In 2006, the Clinic celebrated its 50th anniversary attended by over 300 national and international ophtalmologists. On that occasion, eminent experts took an active part by delivering lectures followed by live surgeries. For the first time in our country, transconjuctival nonsuturing vitrectomy (TSV 25 gr), so called ’’mosquito technique’ of posterior vitrectomy and the results of the use of a new laser in the treatment of glaucoma – selective laser trabeculoplasty - were demonstrated.
By the end of 2007, the Department of the eye laser surgery introduced into its routine practice surgical procedure for dicreasing dioptry. This Department has its functional diagnostic unit and ward within the Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic.
Surgeries are carried out in 4 operating rooms boasting state-of-the-art equipment. A large number of surgical procedures is performed on an ambulatory basis so that the patients can be discharged after the treatment on the same day.
In 2007, the Clinic provided treatment to 2747 patients and caried out 2373 surgical procedures out of which 400 were done in the posterior segment of the eye. More than 1300 surgical procedures were carried out within the Same Day Surgery Center (ambulatory surgeries).
The length of the treatment period was 4,03 days on average and more than 64% of its capacity were filled.
The Eye ward and Functional diagnostic unit carried out together around 22889 ophthalmologic examinations.
Organizational structure
The Eye Clinic has the Department for the anterior segment of the eye, the Department for the posterior segment of the eye and the Department for laser surgery of the eye. It has its ward and functional diagnostic unit acting within the framework of the Diagnostic Outpatient Clinic.
