History
The Clinic was set up  in 1937 as a part of the Chest Department of the Main Military Hospital and initially devoted to combating of tuberculosis among the soldiers of the Royal Army.
Over the time, along with many new diseases occurring and disappearing, the Clinic was changing its organizational structure, purpose and strength.
In 2005, the Clinic for Lung Diseases was once again restructured.

About the Clinic

The Clinic for Lung Diseases is a medical facility devoted exclusively to the care of patients with lung diseases, as well as education and scientific research like many other advanced medical institutions are. It has introduced and applies numerous most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the treatment of lung diseases

The Clinic today operates 60 inpatient beds furnishing 20 patient rooms within the 3 Clinic’s departments including Intensive care Unit and the Same Day Surgery Hospital. There are also units for invasive diagnostics (Bronchoscopy Unit), the lung function tests   and ambulatory treatment of the patients, all operating under the framework of the Clinic.

The Clinic is staffed by 9 specialists in pneumophtiziology, two of which hold PhD degree, 23 medical nurses and 10 auxiliary workers.
 
The main activities of the Clinic are the treatment, education and scientific-research work. Those cross-functional activities are performed through   main functional units, clinical departments, functional diagnostic units and Invasive Pulmonary Diagnostic Unit.

From the personnel and materiel aspects, all units are highly qualified for performance of the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at the pulmonary departments.
This Clinic is specific for its method of work. Each disease should be completely confirmed by the advanced methods as to ensure that the most appropriate method of treatment is chosen. Following the latest trends in the fields of diagnostics and therapy, the Clinic’s physicians introduce the latest treatment methods into the Clinic’s practice. Due to that, they are among the first or the only one in our country to apply such procedures.
 
The state-of-the art intervention and diagnostic procedures in the field of Respiratory Medicine include the following:  
1.    Intervention Pulmology
•    Bronchoscopy with flexible and rigid bronchoscope and securing  the biopsy specimens for microbiological, cytological, histologic and immunological analyses, bronchial aspiration, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchobiopsy, transbronchial biopsy and transbronchial needle  aspiration biopsy;
•    Fluorescent bronchoscopy and NBI (narrow band imaging) bronchoscopy for the detection of pre-malignant, early malignant changes and neovascularization.;
•    Interventional bronchoscopic procedures  for rapid palliation in patients with   central airway obstruction, bronchoscopic electroresection, argon plasma coagulation, laser resection and stent placement;
•    CT or  fluoroscopy- guided percutaneous needle biopsy;
•    Pleural needle biopsy   and taking biopsy samples of the pleura and parietal pleura  for microbiological, cytological, histologic and immunological analyses;
•    Selective angiography of the lung blood vessels and bronchial arteries and   embolization of pathological artero-venous complications with temporary and permanent  material;
•    Lung function tests while the person being tested is sitting down and not moving   and   exercise  stress tests applying the most advanced technological and software methods: pneumoscreen, spirometry, bodypletismography, arterial blood gas analysis, diffusing capacity of lungs  and the diffusion coefficient  (lung transfer factor);
•    Complete diagnostics and treatment of malignant diseases of the lungs;
•    Diagnostics and treatment of the all non-specific diseases of the airways and the lung parenchyma
 
Over the last two years, the Clinic treated mostly the patients with the malignant diseases of the lung, pleura and mediastinum as well as other diseases of which the most frequent are chronic lung obstruction diseases, tuberculosis, non-specific pulmonary diseases and diseases of the lung intersticium.
 
Last year, the Clinic hospitally treated 1.847 patients for an average of 9 days. The total number of hospital days was 17.520. The Clinic operated at the 80% of its full bed capacity. The Clinic provided treatment to 554 chemotherapy patients as well. It performed 340 bronchoscopies, 50 electrosurgical resections of changes in major airways, 4 balloon dilatations and 2 stent placements. Perutaneous needle biopsies were performed on 82 patients and 259 patients underwent toracocentesis.
 
 
Admission procedure

The admission to the Clinic is obtained through the Pulmonary Ward within the operating hours between 07.30 and 14.30 hours or through the Emergency Center   when the duty   physician pulmonologist is responsible for such cases.

At admission, the patient, either military or civilian, needs to have a GP’s referral certified by his/her respective Social Insurance Company. All self-pay patients would be required to make a deposit at the amount determined by the Head of the Clinic or duty physician.
