About the Clinic

The Clinic for Cardiology is responsible for the organization and treatment of patients with acute internal diseases, acute conditions of chronic internal diseases, acute complicated neurological conditions as well as treatment of all other diseases requiring invasive monitoring, nursing care and therapy. It offers graduate medical training programs (residencies, master’s and PhD programs), education and training for the Reserve Officers School students and scientific research as well.

History

The Clinic for cardiology of the Military Medical Academy has undergone a long development process.
-    During the second World War (1944 -1946) - a cardiological ward equipped with one EKG  was established as a part of Internal Department of the General Military Hospital;
-    1949 - Doctor Sava Savić introduced vectocardiography;
-    Doctor Djordje Petrović established a spirometry laboratory as well as a laboratory for analyzing gases in blood and expired in normal breath;
-    1951 - Cardiology Department  was established within the framework of Clinic for Internal Diseases;
-    Doctors Ivan Fejgelj, Djordje Popović, Milorad Jašović and Siniša Kamenica introduced catheterization of the heart, which was initially applied  at the Radiology Institute;
-    1983 – the Department developed into the Clinic for Cardiology

Organizational structure

The Clinic for Cardiology  has the capacity of 72 inpatient beds. It has three departments with 24 beds each. There are also two rooms within the Clinic adapted for echocardiography of Clinic’s hospitalized patients. All three Departments of the Cardiology Clinic provide complete clinical pre-admission and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures. There are also the   Functional Diagnostic Unit and Cardiology Ward operating within the framework of the Clinic.

Services

Each day, the Clinic offers the following services:
•    Systematic checkups for the employed personnel;
•    Functional control of inserted pacemakers;
•    Consiliar examinations;
•    Preoperative assessment  for cardiac surgery

The Clinic’s Functional Diagnostic Unit operating within the framework of the Outpatient Diagnostic Clinic provides complete noninvasive cardiological diagnostics (echocardiographic diagnostics, EKG, holter monitoring,  ergometry). It has four wards for functional control of pacemakers, measurement of ventricular late potentials,   cardiologic consiliar examinations and the EKG Ward as well.

All those examinations can be conducted within the same day (except for a continuous tape recording of a patient's EKG and blood pressure) and they are performed by renowned cardiologists, highly experienced professors supported with trained medical  staff

This Functional Diagnostic Unit also offers physicians education in echocardiography and other above mentioned diagnostic procedures according to the latest didactic and practical teaching programs (through one-month, three-month or six-month courses). Upon completion of those programs, the attendees of the Echocardiography School receive from the seminar leader a valid vocational certificate-diploma certifying that they are qualified and trained for independent performance of echocardiographic procedures.

There is also the Cardiology Ward operating within the framework of the Cardiology Clinic. It deals with pre-clinical examinations and treatment of military patients with cardiovascular diseases. All the three wards located on the third floor of the Outpatient Diagnostic Clinic building, admit about 100 patients each day. Most of them are patients suffering from arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease. Particular attention is given to early detection and treatment of ischemic heart disease what requires cooperative efforts of the wards of the Functional Diagnostic Unit for ergometry, holter monitoring and echocardiography.

When the nature of the disease requires invasive diagnostic procedures and continuous monitoring, the patients are hospitalized at the Cardiology Clinic or Emergency Medicine Clinic with which the clinic has established excellent cooperation. Since the contemporary cardiology requires an interdisciplinary approach to medical problems and cooperative efforts of other MMA’s units, the Clinic for Cardiology operates in close coordination with the MMA’s Institutes of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Biochemistry.
