In organizational terms, the Clinic for Emergency and Internal Medicine is divided into two Departments:
• Department of Emergency Cardiology, and
• Reanimatology Department
There are echocardiographic diagnostic and blood pressure holter monitoring units operating within the framework of Functional Diagnostics.
The Clinic has 12 specialists; 11 of them are specialists in Internal Medicine, 3 of whom are subspecialist in Cardiology. One is a specialist in Neurology. The Clinic deals with all the patients with acute or chronic internal diseases, that is, all those requiring hemodynamic monitoring, artificial ventilation and intensive parenteral therapy. The majority of patients suffer from acute cardiovascular diseases, primarily coronary syndrome and aortic diseases. There is also a considerable number of patients with symptoms and signs of severe respiratory and kidney insufficiency as well as insufficiency of other organs and organ systems.
The Clinic’s main mission is the treatment of acute coronary syndrome and its complications according to the most advanced methods. Over recent years, the Clinic applies the primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with or without stent placement (depending on indications) in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The Clinic routinely applies fibronolytic therapy in its clinical practice, and since recently, it uses irreversible blocators of IIBIIIa receptors for thromocytes based on indications.
The average number of inpatients admitted to the Clinic exceeds 1200 per year. Admission to the Clinic is mainly obtained through the Emergency Center and by transfer of patients from other MMA’s clinics or other hospitals according to the indications and by the approval of the MMA Management.
The Clinic provides the following forms of education and training:
- Didactic and practical training for internal, general and emergency internal medicine residents;
- Didactic lectures for physicians undergoing postgraduate training (MS or PhD programs of study), and
- Didactic training for medical technicians
The Clinic conducts scientific-research projects in the following fields:
- Genetics in ischemic diseases- the project approved by the Republic of Serbia Ministry of Science and conducted in close coordination with the Institute of Nuclear Sciences "VINČA”;
- Hemostatic, endothelial and inflammatory markers and their significance in percutaneous intracoronary interventions;
- Genetic polymorphism of the coagulation factors in patients with acute myocardial infarction;
- Myocardial viability and ischemia assessment by stress EKG and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT scan) in patients with primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction;
- Non-invasive assessment of myocardial electrical instability after myocardial infarction, and
- Prognostic importance of immunophenotypization of lymphocytes prior to percutaneous intracoronary interventions in ischemic cardiovascular events.
