Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology

The Clinic has a long tradition of diagnosing and treating rheumatic and rheumatology associated diseases. It offers the possibility of diagnosing quickly and timely inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis, Sjögren’s syndrome, inflammatory diseases of muscless, blood vessels and seronegative spondyloarthritis. For diagnosis of metabolic rheumatiod diseases such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia, the Clinic uses the state-of-the-art apparatus for measuring the bone density. In its work, it relies on the assistance of the  MMA’s Radiology Institute.

The most advanced therapeutic Protocol including biological medications, bephosphates, etc. is applied in the treatment of these diseases.

Within the clinical studies framework, the Clinic studies the most advanced therapeutic protocols. Its physicians acts also as consultants for the rheumatology related problems at the institutional and wider level.

Rheumatology Functional Diagnostic Unit and Wards

The Rheumatology Functional Diagnostic Unit and Wards are the integral parts of the Group of   Functional Diagnostic Units and Wards for Internal Diseases within the Outpatient Diagnostic Clinic.

They deal with ambulatory diagnosis and the treatment of rheumatoid diseases. Besides cardiovascular, those diseases are considered to be the most common diseases of the contemporary world occurring among at least 20% of the population.
Such incidence rate of rheumatoid diseases is associated with, apart from other things, aging of population, reduced mobility throughout the life and work, irregular nutrition, etc.

Rheumatoid diseases include:
•    Inflammatory rheumatoid diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, Still’s disease (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), systemic diseases of connective tissue, spondyloarthritis, gout, hondrocalcinosis ....
•    Degenerative rheumatoid diseases: osteoarthrosis, spondylosis and discarthrosis
•    Joint connective tissue rheumatiod diseases: tendinitis, bursitis, tenovaginitis, enthesitis ..
•    Metabolic rheumatiod diseases: osteoporosis and osteomalacia, Paget’s disease ....

The two rheumatology wards carry out 20000 subspecialist’s exams each year. Expertise and knowledge of 4 doctors (three  with  Ph.D. and one with Master’s  degree) coupled with the application of  the most advanced laboratory and morphologic diagnostic methods and interdisciplinary coordination with physicians in other specialties ensure precise diagnostis and tratment of all rheumatoid diseases. In cooperation with the physicians from the Reumatology Clinic it is possible to conduct research and treatment.
 
There is also the Osteoporosis Section which has been operating since 1998, within the framework of the Reumatology Functional Diagnostic Unit and Wards. It deals with the measurement of the bone tissue density. The use of Lunar GE Prodigy Advance osteodensitometer ensures quick, cost-effective and precise diagnosis of osteoporosis, the most common  metabolic disease,  using Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) method with the minimum of radiotion.  Measurement of the bone tissue density in other regions of the body such as  lumbar region of the vertebral column, the neck of the thigh bone, forearm, hand, the whole body ...). All the physicians are qualified and trained to operate   osteodensitometer, while two of them possess the international certificate of osteodensitometry awarded by International  Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).  The Osteoporosis Section performs around 10 000 osteodensitometries each year. In addition to that, patients can get osteoporosis related treatment, dietary and lifestyle recommendations as well as advises for   physical activity.  

The Clinic’s Functional Diagnostic Unit ensures precise diagnostics of rheumatoid diseases by ultrasound examination of sceletal system. Each year, it performs 2500 ambulatory diagnostic and therapeutic interventions such as joint taps, intraarticular, intramuscular and intravenous drug infusions, etc.
