Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is highly specialized for practicing rehabilitation programs for both MMA’s inpatient and outpatient population. It has the state-of-the-art equipment and is specific for its early rehabilitation programs for patients immediately after the surgery, myocardial or brain infarction, etc.
The history of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation within the Armed Forces begins with 1930 when Department of Roentgenology and Physical Therapy was established and added to the roster of the Main Military Hospital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The Clinic organizationally structured in the current way has been operating since 1980.
The most important services this Clinic offers include the following:
• Ambulatory physical therapy ( electro-, hydro-, magnetic-, laser therapies and acupuncture, etc.), and
• Rehabilitation in theclinical setting as indicated by the MMA’s physiatrist.
The Clinic has three departments:
1. Clinical Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation operates 24 beds and deals with patients requiring prolonged early rehabilitation intervention. It is equipped with apparatus for physical therapy such as electro-, sono-, magnetic- and laser therapies. Patient care is covered by medical nurses and paramedics distributed over three shifts (day, evening, night).
2. Outpatient Department provides therapeutic services to ambulatory patients requiring physical therapy. It includes various therapeutic procedures used in physical medicine and rehabilitation and range from conventional (thermo and phototherapy, various electrotherapy modalities, sonotherapy, etc.) to advanced (magneto- laser therapy) and complementary methods of treatment (acupuncture and hypo practice). It boasts a modern hydro-block with hydrotherapy equipment such as therapeutic swimming pool, underwater massage tubs, galvanic baths, as well as kinesiotherapy and occupational therapy cabinets. The therapy of blood circulation disorders includes the use of a vasculator.
3. Interclinic Service – It is divided into rehabilitation teams responsible for certain clinics of the Military Medical Academy. There are trauma-orthopedic, surgical, neurological, pulmonary and cardiological teams. Each team comprises a physiatrist acting as both the team leader and a consultant and 10 physiotherapists specialized and trained for specific pathology. The main mission of each team is to introduce, when required, and manage the early rehabilitation intervention for patients at their respective treating clinics. In addition, the team leader (physiatrist-consultant) is responsible for assessing and evaluating patient’s rehabilitation potential, and, based on that, may indicate the need for a prolonged rehabilitation therapy within the Clinic’s First Department. Thus, timely introduced and consistently and fully implemented rehabilitation program may significantly contribute to the quality of rehabilitation process and speed up the recovery of a patient.
The Clinic has 60 staff members: 20 physicians, 1 somatoform disorder therapist, 2 speech therapists-logopedists, 29 senior physiotherapists, 1 senior medical nurse, 5 medical technicians, 4 massagers, 4 paramedics, 1 administrative officer, 2 triage technicians and 1 locker worker.
Each day, the Clinic treats between 300 and 400 patients.
