Day of the Serbian Armed Forces Medical Services

Amphitheater of the Military Medical Academy was the venue of the official celebration commemorating the Day when the first Serbian Garrison Army was established.
Congratulating the Day, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Zoran Djordjevic said that Ministry recognizes Military Healthcare System as important factor in straightening country’s defence capability and resource which can contribute to its affirmation at the national and international level.
-Military physicians and their medical staff always shared the destiny of their people, cultivating long and rich tradition of military medical services. Profession of military physician is especially important. It comprises not only medical knowledge but also additional courage, devotion, dedication and after all, the best medical care provided to all patients either they have military or civilian health insurance coverage. This is well-known fact for all our citizens who are carrying out the treatment in our military medical centers-State Secretary Djordjevic said, pointing out the role of our medical workers in peacekeeping operations worldwide.
Enrollment of new generations of cadets at the MMA Medical Faculty, and this year fifth generation, only confirms that this tradition will be continued, Secretary Djordjevic added.
-The first class of military doctors will be promoted in 2015, as a very important event for whole Serbian Healthcare System, said Djordjevic emphasizing that one of the success confirmation are foreign delegations who are willing to visit Military Medical Academy, beside the financial problems.
Speaking about the significance of the Anniversary, Head of the Military Healthcare Department Brigadier General Prof. Dr. Zoran Popovic reminded all presents that since its establishment in 1839 until the present day, SAF Medical Services abounded with difficulties, the most severe temptations while supporting Serbian Army and Serbian People.
- Serbian Armed Forces Medical Services today, namely Military Healthcare System within its domain of activities, represents valuable resource in Serbian Armed Forces and complete Serbian Healthcare System-pointed out General Popovic relating to the military medical service basic assignments as an arranged system, well-known in the country, region and whole world.
The ceremony was an opportunity for Military Healthcare Department to traditionally award the authors Prof. Dr. Dragana Vukcevic and Brigadier General Academician Prof. Dr. Miodrag Colic for the best work of the Year published in the field of medical sciences. Their monograph publication carried a title "Regulatory T Lymphocytes-Function Development and Clinical Importance" while Prof. Dr. Bela Balint and Prof. Dr. Milena Pavlovic were promoted for the book "Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering".
Marking the Day of the Military Medical Services is linked to the 30th of July 1839, when by the Constitution of the Principality of Serbia, and the Decree on the Establishment of the Garrison Army, Dr. Emerich Lindenmeier was the first doctor to be appointed to the position of Surgeon General in the Main Headquarters.
The Military Health Service has grown into a modern and functionally well-organized unit at all three levels - primary (medical squads of the Serbian AF units), secondary (the Nis Military Hospital, the Belgrade Center of Military Medical Facilities, and the Military Medical Center in Novi Sad) and the tertiary level (the Military Medical Academy).
