Symposium on Gastrointestinal Tract Malignancies

The Symposium dedicated to the treatment of stomach cancer and metastatic colorectal carcinoma organized by the MMA’s Clinic for General Surgery and Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology was held at the Military Medical Academy on October 16, 2012.
At the event opening, head of the Clinic for General Surgery Colonel Asst. Prof. Dr. Mile Ignjatovic delivered the lecture on gastric cancer epidemiology which according to the statistics takes the fifth place by the frequency in our country while considered one of the leading causes of death in the world. Colonel Prof. Dr. Dino Tarabar introduced the attendees with the results of the clinical study ToGA demonstrating that the biology therapy represents the step forward in the treatment of this disease. The role of HER2 status as significant prognostic and predictive factor has been presented by Dr. Ivana Tufegdzic.
Covering the topic of metastatic colorectal cancer, the head of the MMA’s Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology Colonel Prof. Dr. Radoje Doder spoke about the epidemiology of this type of cancer on the global level. The other presentations had for the subjects the importance of angiogenesis inhibition, operative treatment possibilities, role of radiotherapy procedures as well as the efficacy of certain medicaments in the gastrointestinal malignancies treatment.
