07. 03. 2018

The symposium with international participation organized by the Serbian Association for foot and ankle joint Joint surgery, the Serbian Medical Society and the Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Military Medical Academy was held at the Military Medical Academy.
Lectures were delivered by the Chairman of the Committee for Education of the European Association for Foot Surgery and Professor at the University of Barcelona, Dr. Xavier Martín Oliva and Major Dr. Goran Lekic from the Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, MMA.
The algorithms of surgical treatment of the most common deformation of the foot and at the same time the most common deformation of the musculoskeletal system - Hallux valgus, the tibialis posterior muscle syndrome, i.e. the acquired flat foot deformity, arthrosis - degenerative changes in joint cartilage were discussed as well as arthroscopy - minimally invasive ankle joint surgical method. Participants of the symposium had the opportunity to follow the transmission of two live surgeries from the OR, during which the arthroscopic arthrodesis of the ankle joint was performed for the first time at the MMA, that is, the fixation of the joint with a minimally invasive surgery, which is usually performed as a classic "open" surgery. The surgical team of the MMA, led by Professor Xavier, successfully demonstrated surgery of the ankle joint stabilization.
At the symposium, the topic about surgical treatment of the foot and ankle joint was discussed, which often less discussed due to the surgery of the hips and knees. This segment of orthopedic surgery is considered to be demanding due to a large number of possible complications, as well as foot disorders that can be caused by some metabolic disorders, neuropathies, and others, which is why the success of surgery depends on many factors. However, in recent years, foot surgery in Europe is considered to be very current and is in great development due to modern lifestyle i.e. deformations of the foot due to the shape of footwear, overweight, etc.
