History
The Clinic for Cardiosurgery developed from the MMA’s Surgical Clinic. From 1955 to 1983, it operated within the framework of the Department of Thoracic Surgery. From January 1984 to November 2005, it was a part of the Clinic for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. In November 2005, it began operations as an autonomous organizational unit of the Military Medical Academy.
In 1952, the Clinic performed the first closed commissurotomy of mitral stenosis (stenotic mitral valve) and coarctation of the aorta. In 1962, it closed the ventricular septal defect (VSD) by the use of extracorporeal circulation. In 1965, it implanted the first artificial valve and, in 1975, inserted the first vein bypass. In 1984, it performed the Bentyl operation and, in 1989, surgery of the aortic arch in deep hypothermia and circulation arrest.
