Clinic for Cardiosurgery
The Clinic deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of cardiac diseases, the pericardium and chest aorta.
Since 2006, Clinic entamed the treatment project of postinfarctus heart deficiency using implantation of the stem cells from bone marrow. In the last few years, Clinic’s surgeons perform by-pass surgery on the still beating heart.
The Clinic carries out the following procedures:
  • Revascularization of the myocardium - bypass surgery applying the most advanced techniques well-known worldwide
  • Surgery of the heart valves – valvular surgery
  • Surgery of the aorta
  • Combined coronary - valvular surgeries
  • Mechanical complications of the myocardial infarction
  • Surgeries of congenital heart defects particularly in adults
  • Minimum invasive surgical procedures in cardiosurgery
  • Coronary valvular and aortic reoperative surgical interventions.
The Clinic for Cardiosurgery developed from the MMA’s Surgical Clinic. From 1955 to 1983, it operated within the framework of the Department of Thoracic Surgery. From January 1984 to November 2005, it was a part of the Clinic for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. In November 2005, it began operations as an autonomous organizational unit of the Military Medical Academy.
In 1952, the Clinic performed the first closed commissurotomy of mitral stenosis (stenotic mitral valve) and coarctation of the aorta. In 1962, it closed the ventricular septal defect (VSD) by the use of extracorporeal circulation. In 1965, it implanted the first artificial valve and, in 1975, inserted the first vein bypass. In 1984, it performed the Bentyl operation and, in 1989, surgery of the aortic arch in deep hypothermia and circulation arrest.
The military insured patients and civilian referrals can seek services with Cardiosurgery Ward within its hours of operation (from 07.30 a.m. to 03.00 p.m.), Monday through Friday.
